根據近代著名心理學家佛洛依德的心理分析角度，自殺這種行為是基於抑鬱，視自殺為一種「謀殺」行為，是當一個人失去一個他既愛又恨的個體內攝時，便會由內引發出對個體的侵略性或攻擊性的感覺﹔若感覺非常強烈，個體便會進行自殺行為。

　　自殺有十個共通點:

＊自殺的共通目的是尋求一種解決問題的辦法。
＊自殺的共通目標是終止個人的感覺或意識。
＊自殺的誘因通常是來自心理上不能忍受的痛苦。
＊自殺的壓力來源普遍來自不能滿足的心理需要。
＊自殺者的情緒狀態通常是絕望及無助。
＊自殺的個人認知狀態通常是充滿衝突和矛盾。
＊自殺者的理解能力或領悟能力通常是狹隘的。
＊自殺者的行動通常是單向出路的，無法回頭的。
＊自殺者共通的人際交往行為是傅遞自己自殺的意向。
＊自殺者通常利用自殺作為一種一貫應付問題的方法。
